Mary Wanless riding clinics

Event Details

Mary Wanless is an internationally renowned coach, and is the author of the ‘Ride With Your Mind’ books, which have been translated into many languages. She has also authored 8 DVDs. She coaches riders at all levels, from relative novices to two of the top twelve US dressage riders, and some of the Canadian eventing squad. She has B.Sc. degrees in both Physics and Applied Sports Coaching, and holds the BHSI certificate.

This is an intensive learning experience, designed to be challenging, supportive and fun! Bring your own horse or ride one of ours. Each day you will receive a one hour flatwork lesson shared between two people, taught by Mary Wanless and possibly an assistant, or a 45 min private lesson with a seniour RWYM coach. Your second (group) lesson is ‘supervised flatwork’, or if you prefer you can learn groundwork, utilising ‘Equine Learning Theory’, the approach of Australian Andrew McLean.

Each afternoon there is a dismounted workshop, which includes time for questions and answers, and off-horse exercises that illustrate the biomechanics of correct riding.

The maximum group size is 12 people. You can have an extra lesson if you wish on the afternoon when you arrive.

Our covered arena is 22 x 66, with a sand and rubber surface.

Overnight stabling available if required.

Spectators welcome.

Rebecca Webley (Becky), Groom, joined OEC in February 2012.

Becky has completed her Horse Care with Riding City & Guilds Level 1 with us.

Becky enjoys hacking the school horses.

I was horse mad from a very young age. My first horse, Tia Maria, and I competed quite successfully, showing, show jumping and eventing until the mid-1980s. I have owned, started and schooled many horses, and have been an instructor since 1979. However, my life was dominated by unspecified back and hip pain from the age of 10; chiropractic, physiotherapy and painkillers could only do so much.

In 2000 I started learning about rider biomechanics and the Feldenkrais Method. I soon realised that the more I understood my body, the more my riding improved, and the less pain I experienced.

Today, I live a very active life indeed, mostly free from pain.
This has inspired me to help others by combining my Feldenkrais teaching skills with rider biomechanics training in my work with equestrians to improve their equestrian performance.

I love working with all skill levels, young children starting to ride (what a great time to learn good basics), adult beginners, returners and more experienced, through to dressage and eventing riders competing at international levels.
